Why the Best Connector in the Room Still Had to Rebuild His Business

Monty Felts3 min readThe Climb Series

For most of my career, connecting people was my gift. I could walk into any room, find the people I could help, and build real trust fast. Relationships came naturally to me, and for a long time I believed that gift alone would carry me all the way.

Then I nearly lost the business anyway.

By 2019, I had walked away from a steady corporate paycheck, certain I would be one of the mortgage guys making millions. Instead I was in a rented house I could not have qualified to buy, three young kids, my wife Emily holding things together, and one or two loans a month coming in against bills that would not wait. I was the best connector in the room and I was quietly going under.

That season taught me something I have never forgotten. Your greatest strength can be the exact thing that hides your greatest gaps.

When your gift becomes your blind spot

A strength like that fools you. It works so often you quit checking what it is quietly covering for.

My relationships were opening doors. What I had not built was everything behind those doors. I was weak on the technical side of loans. I had no real systems. I had never learned to lead a team or to build a business that could stand without me carrying every piece of it. Connection got people in the door. Nothing I had built kept the house standing once they were inside.

For a while the gift masked all of it. There was always one more person to meet, one more relationship to spark. But you cannot relationship your way out of a missing foundation forever. Eventually the gaps show up, and they showed up for me all at once.

What actually pulled me out

It was not working harder. I was already working plenty hard. What pulled me out was humility, and getting access to someone further up the road who could hand me the map.

I had to admit that talent had taken me as far as talent could. I had to become coachable, let a mentor correct me and challenge me, and go learn the parts of the business I had been avoiding because they did not come easy. That is a humbling thing for someone whose whole identity was being good with people. But it was the only door forward. I also believe now that none of that season was wasted. There is no waste in the wait if you let it build the person who can actually hold what is coming.

I stopped leaning only on the gift and started building the things the gift had let me skip. Standards. Systems. Real understanding of the business. Leadership. The unglamorous foundation under the relationships.

The plates always fall eventually

If your strength is people, you know the feeling of keeping a lot of plates spinning at once. Another coffee, another call, another relationship to hold the whole thing up.

It is impressive to watch, and it is exhausting to live. Plate spinning is not a foundation. It is effort standing in for structure, and the moment you slow down, the plates come down with you. I ran my business that way for years, and 2019 was every plate hitting the floor at the same time. The relationships were never the problem. The missing structure underneath them was.

Connection opens the door. Standards keep the house standing.

Here is what I would tell the version of me from 2019, and what I would tell any producer whose strength is people.

Your gift is real, and it matters. Relationships will always be the front door of this business. But a front door is not a house. If there is nothing solid behind it, the gift just gets you deeper into a structure that cannot hold weight. You do not have to abandon your strength. You have to build something solid enough to hold the weight it keeps bringing you, so the doors it opens lead somewhere that lasts.

Building the foundation did not cost me the gift. It finally gave the gift somewhere solid to stand.

Build the foundation under your strength

If relationships are your superpower, protect it, and then go build everything underneath it. Learn the business at a deeper level. Set your standards. Build your systems. Become the kind of leader your relationships deserve to be led by.

That rebuild is the story underneath Lending Unleashed, and it is why I wrote it for the person who is talented and still stuck. Your strength got you here. A foundation is what takes you the rest of the way. Do not make it carry weight it was never meant to hold alone.
